Description: DC COMICS DC Studios DC Cinematic Universe SPECULATIVE Key BATMAN BRAVE AND THE BOLD (2026-2027)First Appearance: Stephanie Brown as the new Batgirl JAMES GUNN'S new cinematic DC Universe unveils itself in 2024 with the premiere of Creature Commandos and the beginning of production on Superman: Legacy, and there's little doubt that the DCU's next biggest project -- it's BATMAN project -- will be the next project in the spotlight. We already know that the Batman film, Batman: Brave and The Bold, will be an ensemble film featuring ROBIN but also bringing in other key Bat-family members that haven't yet been seen on the Silver Screen. As for who those yet unseen characters might be, NIGHTWING and BATGIRL stand above all others as worthy candidates to come next after DAMIAN WAYNE's Boy Wonder. Gunn's made it clear that it's writer Grant Morrison's Batman and Robin (2009) series that serves as the film's creative inspiration, which itself was one of a few different DC comics that defined the cross-title event "Batman: Reborn." During this event, it was Dick Grayson, NIGHTWING, wearing the Bat-cowl instead of Bruce Wayne. Similarly, as BARBARA GORDON was already ORACLE, former Spoiler STEPHANIE BROWN became the new BATGIRL in her own ongoing series launched consecutively in 2009 with Batman and Robin. If Gunn does include Batgirl in Brave and The Bold, featuring a Stephanie Brown/Batgirl instead of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl is the more logical choice. While Gordon is more closely associated with the female hero, for the general public, a Stephanie Brown behind the mask would be no more or less new and different than having Damian Wayne as Robin. Furthermore, Brown as a younger Batgirl frees up Gordon to stay Oracle in the new DCU, thus not eliminating a well-rounded and unique DC character, one who would be older and on par with Nightwing and thus less of a subordinate to Batman. For all those reasons (and a couple others), DC's 2009 series premiere Batgirl #1 is, in our estimation, a solid Speculative Key for the DC Cinematic Universe collector and for all fans anticipating the release of the coming DC Studios' film, Batman: Brave and the Bold. While it may still be some time before the cast of the new DCU film is known, 2024 fast approaches, and when it comes to giving your collection what it deserves, there's never a better time than today.
