Description: BERNDORF METALWARE FACTORY ARTHUR KRUPP SET OF SIX DINNER KNIVES Set of six antique German silver plated and steel blade dinner knives by BMF c.1910 The famous Berndorf Metalware Factory (in German Berndorfer Metallwaarenfabrik) or BMF for short was founded in 1843 in the small village of Berndorf, situated in the region Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. Many of the factory marks contain a bear profile due to the similarity between the words Berndorf and Bärendorf (in German the last word means "bear village"). The stamps on these knives are rubbed and hard to see clearly but I think they have the standard BMF mark used between 1891 and 1927. One only has the standing bear stamped into its blade – see photo. The handles are silver plated and the blades are steel (not stainless steel) and so have weathered with time and use. They came with a set of forks of the same design and made by BMF but with the Alpacca–Silber II mark. They were matched with a set of small dessert spoons but by a different maker and 800 silver quality rather than plated and are a slightly different shape (see last photo and our other listings for these items). CONDITION In good antique condition overall but of course the steel blades have deteriorated with time as they all do.
