Description: DETAILS: Original memorial service pinback button issued by the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. Features a portrait of the young Civil Rights leader wearing his Black Panthers beret. It was distributed at his funeral service held April 12th, 1968 at the Ephesians Church of God in Berkeley, California. Over 3000 mourners attended the funeral. A rally held shortly afterwords at the Alameda County Courthouse near Lake Merritt in Oakland was attended by over 5,000 people, and included a eulogy and speeches by actor Marlon Brando, Kathleen Cleaver, Bobby Seale and James Forman. Measures 1 3/4" inches. Rare. Robert James Hutton (1950 – 1968), also known as "Lil' Bobby", was the treasurer and first recruit to join the Black Panther Party. He was also the first Panther member to be killed by the police. Alongside Eldridge Cleaver and other Panthers, he was involved in a confrontation with the Oakland Police following the assassination of Martin Luther King on April 6, 1968. He was shot multiple time by officers while surrendering with his hands raised. He was only 17 years old at the time of his death. His funeral drew over 10,000 mourners from across the United States. In death he became a martyr for many disenfranchised African American youth of the 1960's.
