Description: Although much of what is known of him is more legend than historical fact, Bodhidharma was a Buddhist monk from south India who is credited with bringing Chan Buddhism to China in the 5th or 6th century CE. Bodhidharma is said to have emphasized the essential role of meditation in the Buddha’s teachings. He is also thought to have trained the monks of Shaolin Monastery in kungfu, as a way to keep them physically strong in counterbalance to their many hours spent in sitting meditation. This small but weighty metal statue of Bodhidharma shows him attired in monk’s garb and seated in meditation posture, with eyes wide open as a reminder to avoid sleepiness while meditating. The statue has a hole on the bottom. See pictures.
