book folk-songs of old Quebec, vintage, illustrated, music scores, bilingual

Description: FOLK-SONGS OF OLD QUEBEC by Marius Barbeau. Translationsby Regina Lenore Shoolman, illustrations by Arthur Lismer. (National Museum ofCanada, undated but internal evidence suggests it is the 1935 first edition, nopublication location but obviously Ottawa; paperback; 72 pages.) In the 1930sBarbeau worked tirelessly to preserve and promote Canada’s earliest heritages(I also have his novel The Downfall ofTemlaham, which preserved much Indigenous culture: contact me if interested);this one, as the title explains, salvaged a great number of Quebecois songs, and presents them both in French and in English along with musical transcriptsof each song. The book includes 25 pages of historical background essays. Avolume that should be treasured by Quebecois and by students of early Frenchmusic. My copy is listed as in poor/acceptable condition because there arestains and worn spots on the cover; the pages, however, are intact, clean, andstill bound. A few lovely sketches contributed by the famed Group of Sevenpainter, Arthur Lismer.
