Description: LISTED HERE A MAGNIFICENT LARGE MOUNTED PICTURE FROM THE ARCHIVES.40 YEARS OLD PRINT FROM THE ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH OF 1846 EARLY DAYS OF STEAM RAILWAYSThis image of the Great Western was made nearly five years after its completion, when Bristol was already connected to Exeter and Birmingham. The decision to use a gauge of seven feet on the Great Western was a result of Brunel's belief that more powerful and faster locomotives could be used while carriages would be more comfortable. The standard gauge of four feet eight and a half inches was only a convention, and Brunel did not think in conventional terms, a fact demonstrated in such ventures as the Great Eastern Steamship and the South Devon Atmospheric Railway. Railway companies were private commercial organisations and were not concerned with a national network, at least until 1844 when the broad gauge reached Gloucester, already link-ed to Birmingham on standard gauge. In this view broad-gauge wagons and all the equipment of a goods depot are visible. SIZE: 26 x 17cm CONDITION: 40 YEARS OLD PERFECTOUR MOUNTED RAILWAY PRINTS are identical visually to a regular paper or photographic image but enhanced with an extra-rigid backing to provide stability and protection. In short, the image is mounted onto a substance for ultimate protection against warping and damaged corners. The print is perfect for free-standing display, an album collection, or framing.
