Description: DETAILS: Original pinback button issued by the Brown Berets (BB) - Los Boinas Cafés. Circa 1967. Front has written in Spanish : Oranizense, TFW (Get Organized Temporary Foreign Workers). Has union bug stamp on curl. Measures 1 1/2" inches. Rare. BACKGROUND: With the end of the Temporary Foreign Workers (TWF) program in 1964, Congress claimed that they were trying to improve the lives of Mexican farm laborers in the United States. The TFW program was created by the Bracero Accords in 1942. By the 1960s hundreds of thousands of Mexican workers resided in the US under the treaty in impoverished condition. It was felt that removing foreign Mexican workers would increase the wages of American farm workers. However, nothing could be further from the truth. What actually occurred was that a large number of the Mexican workers decided to stay in the United States and continue to work illegally in the US than return the hardships they faced in Mexico. But, because they were illegal aliens without documentation liable to deportation, they proved to be easily exploited by the ranchers and farmers who employed them. This button issued by the Brown Berets encourages Mexican workers to "Get Organized". The Brown Berets (BB) were a revolutionary Chicano group at the forefront of the Mexican American civil rights movement. They were closely aligned with the Black Panther Party (BPP) and employed many of the Panthers tactics.
