Description: Hello, My name is Stacey and I have been creating Native American art for the last 30 years, full time, for a living. Over the years i have collected stones, shells, and turquoise from around the world, worked in wood, ivory, serpentines, turquoise, shells, quartz, coral, petrified wood, and fossilized coral to name a few. I've worked materials from 2 in hardness to 8 in hardness on the MOHS scale, carved in the round, relief carved, inlayed, and worked in composite carvings. The seven colors I feel that worked best for me are blue, white, black, orange, red, purple, and Pink. I also use serpentines from the four corner states in Americas. I particularly like serpentines that come from the Apache White Mountains near Globe Arizona. The neutral colors they provide nicely compliment the 7 other colors. I grew up in Zuni New Mexico which is known for its fetish carvings. Indian fetishes are hand-carved objects which represent the spirits of animals or the forces of nature. From the earliest times in North America, Indians have used fetishes in an effort to master the arbitrary and unpredictable forces beyond their control. The earliest fetishes were a stone that was found, which may have looked like an animal. When another special stone was found, the two stones would be bound together with a piece of sinue. Small beads or shell with some bright feathers would be attached as a matter of adornment. The more you put into it, offered, the greater the power it represented. I thought it would be fun to offer some of these stones, out of my personal collection, to the public. The medicine man says everything is alive; even stones. May sound bizarre but, a quartz crystal's vibrations are used to keep time in a watch. The quartz has energy like all other rocks. It is alive with energy. I would like to see what others can make from the materials I use. Its fun to think of the stones I'm steward of, going out into the world, and being turned into art by somebody else before they continue their journey. The journey may even be to end up in your collection, on a shelf in a cool place. Enjoying the atmosphere. The turquoise is mixed. The black is Anthracite which is called jet and it comes from Europe. The reds oranges and purples are spiney oyster shell from the Baja tip of Mexico. The Gold Lip Mother of Pearl comes from the Philippines and has a nice pearly white. The pink is Pink Mussel shell from the upper part of the Mississippi river. I call it PMS for short. Pipestone is from Minnesota, and 90% of the serpentines are from three of the four corner states in southwest America. Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Ive also included some leathers and feathers than could be used for your crafts. Thank you for your time and i wish everyone the best. Sincerly, Stacey Turpen.
