His given name was Nishimo (西望). Profile Kitamura was one of the most prominent sculptors of the Showa era. His notable works include the colossal "Nagasaki Peace Statue" installed in Nagasaki Peace Park (image 5.6)and the statue of "Itagaki Taisuke" placed inside the National Diet Building. He was a recipient of the Order of Culture and the Blue Ribbon Medal of Honor, and was designated as a Person of Cultural Merit. In recognition of Seibo's achievements, the Japan Sculptors Association named their exhibition's top prize the "Kitamura Seibo Award" (also known as the Seibo Award). The Peace Statue (平和祈念像, Heiwa Kinenzō) is a statue located in Peace Park in Matsuyama-machi, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Overview [edit] The Peace Statue was unveiled on August 8, 1955. The statue was planned by Nagasaki City as part of the commemorative events for the 10th anniversary of the atomic bombing in 1955. Construction began in 1951, and the unveiling ceremony was held on August 8, 1955. It is located in the "Zone of Wishes" within Nagasaki's Peace Park. The statue was created by sculptor Kitamura Seibo, who was born in the former Minami-Arima Town (now South Shimabara City) in Minamitakaki District. He crafted it in his 70s at his studio in Inokashira Nature and Culture Park in Musashino City, Tokyo. The statue stands 9.7 meters tall, with a 3.9-meter-high pedestal, and weighs about 30 tons. It has an iron frame core, with bronze parts on the surface directly coated with pure white plaster. A lightning rod is installed on the index finger of the right hand. The production cost of the statue was 30 million yen, took 4 years to complete, and was entirely funded by donations from within Japan and abroad. The 20 million yen cost for the pedestal was covered by Nagasaki City's budget. On the left side of the front is a plaque reading "Peace Statue". On the right side is the "Words for the Erection of the Peace Statue" by Tagawa Tsutomu, who was the mayor of Nagasaki at the time of its construction. On the back is an inscription of "Words from the Creator of the Peace Statue" by Kitamura Seibo. Size: Approximately 22cm.
