The Last Days Of Pompeii by Sir Edward Bulwer, Lord Lytton (1803-1873) Bulwer Lytton was an early Victorian with a strong interest in the mystical cults of Rome [ Italy ]. He wrote several novels skillfully blending metaphysics and the occult into the story. His romantic historical novel, The Last Days of Pompeii, is a tale of passion, hate, revenge, and adventure. The setting is the ancient city of Pompeii , in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, in AD 79. The story concerns Glaucus, a handsome Greek who is beloved by almost every woman in the story; Ione, the Naples girl he loves; Nadia, a blind slave who is in love with Glauco, and the excellently portrayed Arbaces, a priest of the cult of Isis - the Egyptian goddess . Other noteworthy characters include Julia, a rich and mean heiress who is in love with Glauco, and Salustio, a dissipated and drunken Roman. The plot revolves around the constant intrigues of the characters, which include magic love potions , betrayals and heroism. Behind it all is the ominous backdrop of a smoking volcano , Mount Vesuvius , preparing to violently erupt... "Heaven had given to Glaucus every blessing but one: it had given him beauty, health, fortune, genius, illustrious descent, a heart of fire, a mind of poetry; but it had denied him the heritage of freedom. He was born in Athens ( Greece ), the subject of Rome. Succeeding early to an ample inheritance, he had indulged that inclination for travel so natural to the young, and had drunk deep of the intoxicating draught of pleasure amidst the gorgeous luxuries of the imperial court...." ------------- Good Condition Some general wear to the binding.
