Description: California: For Health, Pleasure and Residence. A Book for Travellers and Settlers. By Charles Nordhoff. New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers. 1872. 255 pp. 8.75" x 6.5". A truly fascinating book with wonderful illustrations and several maps. The early part of the book is geared to tourists and describes the routes by railroad with attention given to what travelers will see along the way - several pages of description of Chicago, a number of pages of details about riding on a train in a Pullman car, a chapter on Salt Lake City, and another on the Central Pacific Railroad. There are chapters on what to see in California as a tourist, a chapter on gold mining and a chapter on what California offers for "invalids". Much of the remainder on the book focuses on agriculture in California. There are also chapters on Spanish Californians, Native Americans as farm laborers, and the Chinese and the building of the railroads. There are several pages of interesting advertisements at the back of the book. I add new listings daily and am happy to combine shipping. More Genealogy & Local History Books Books will be carefully packaged and shipped in a cardboard box.
