Description: THE COMPLETE DREAMLANDS Vintage Classic setting and scenarios for the Call of Cthulhu RPG Chaosium #2363 Originally published in boxed form in 1986, this is the Fourth Edition, expanded & revised trade paperback version from 1997. Originally written primarily by Sandy Petersen, Chris Williams was responsible for the revisions and expanded material from the 4th edition onward through the 6th. As mentioned above, from 1986 up until the now Chaosium has released different versions of this product a total of six times. Original owner, this is our reader copy of the Fourth Edition from 1997, and is probably our second favorite of all of the varieties. One of their "Compact" line of books, which were the second major round of reprints that Chaosium released. Ironically, some of the "Compact" reprints actually contained different/more material than earlier versions. This edition of Dreamlands has fewer scenarios to play than previous versions (in our opinion, the books' only real sin), but greatly expanded background material. Never used this copy for play, only to read the material new to this edition, its still in Good to Fair Condition overall. Flaws: There is some waviness in the clearcoat of the front and back cover wraps, all towards the bottom. This came to us Brand New in shrink wrap and this flaw was always present, so maybe it was a missed quality control issue from the printer (?), we'll never know. There is also a light buckling of some of the pages, and a light stain on the inside back cover, incurred when we accidentally dropped the book in one hand, and a cup of water in the other at the same time! Otherwise the interior is 100% clean with no pen or pencil marks, tight spine and all of the player hand-outs are still firmly attached at the rear of the book. This version also includes the Super-Cool frameable two color map of The Dreamlands, but unlike in the second edition this map comes loose, unattached to the binding of the book. Please consult photos. Review from RPG.NET: "Lovecraft’s DREAMLANDS is an "Arabian Nights" style fantasy world which we can visit when we dream, and the original Dreamlands supplement written by Sandy Petersen was nice, but I found his portrayal a bit academic and fragmented. It was not until Chris Williams came on board for the 4th. Edition (this version) that I felt the supplement came to life! Chapters are familiar, with an introduction "Through the Gate of Deeper Slumber" covering topics on the Dreamlands in general, Dreaming skills, Nightmare Effects and artefacts that get you there. The second chapter "Evoking the Atmosphere of Dreams" is expanded upon the original and nicely written. After that we get a summary of Lovecraft’s "The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath" presented as "The Dream-Quest of Randolph Carter." Next is the "Gazetteer of the Dreamlands", again expanded to include places mentioned in the works of Dreamland authors other than Lovecraft, such as Brian Lumley and Gary Myers. "People of the Dreamlands," expanded in this edition, adds statistics and brief backgrounds on important personalities and some even stranger beings. Next "The Dreamlands Bestiary" and "Gods of the Dreamlands" are nicely updated and well illustrated, and finally there is "The Dreamlands Grimoire" which is so much better organized and presented in this edition. The second section of the book includes two scenarios, "Lemon Sails" by Phil Frances and "Pickman’s Student" by Keith Herber. Both scenarios are excellent, but the latter by veteran author Keith Herber is one of the best scenarios I’ve seen for the Call of Cthulhu game in any supplement. To round out this edition there are two appendices, one on creating Dreamlands investigators, and a Dreamlands Bibliography. Artwork is generally excellent, with evocative pieces mostly by Kevin Ramos, Jason Eckhardt and Paul Carrick. The map of the Dreamlands is well done and, all-in-all The Complete Dreamlands is a great buy, a definite improvement on the original!
