Description: Welcome to Pioneer Fossils! A Certificate of Authenticity, which has a photo of the exact item you purchased on it, will accompany the specimen. Here is a nice piece of Jurassic fossil dinosaur bone from a Camarasaurus, from the world-famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. It lived about 150 million years ago, in what today is called the Morrison Formation. It is a piece of a Camarasaurus femur bone, measuring about 2.6" by 2", and 3.6" at the longest diagonal measurement (varies) and weighing about 8.5 oz. Excavated in September 2020. The femur is also called the hip bone, the biggest bone in the body. One photo shows a small bit of gembone. No paint or restoration has been applied. Also, very tiny bits may come off in shipping, but not enough to affect the beauty of the piece. We wrap it fully and very carefully. If you are not good with this, please do not order. Camarasaurus was the most prolific sauropod that lived in North America. Sauropods were the giants of the land, herbivorous giants with 4 post-like legs, long necks and long tails, and a small head. The Sinclair logo has the outline of a sauropod on it. Camarasaurus was discovered in 1877 by Edward Drinker Cope, and ranged from 49 feet in length to much larger. As fascinating as the Camarasaurus was and is, that is only part of the story here. The Bone Cabin Quarry got its name because of its proximity to the famed Bone Cabin. We are going to quote Wikipedia here (which hopefully will be okay since we donate to them annually): "Bone Cabin Quarry is a dinosaur quarry that lies approximately fifty-five miles northwest of Laramie, Wyoming near historic Como Bluff. During the summer of 1897 Walter Granger, a paleontologist from the American Museum of Natural History, came upon a hillside littered with Jurassic period dinosaur bone fragments. Nearby was a sheepherder's cabin built entirely out of fossil bones, hence the name "Bone Cabin Quarry." After Granger's discovery in late August 1897, the quarry was kept secret until the summer of 1898, when the manpower could be amassed to undertake a full-scale excavation. Bone Cabin Quarry was excavated from 1898 until 1905, when the productivity of specimens thinned. Recently, some excavating has resumed there. We invite you to visit our store. We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of Authenticity). Some words of caution about COA’s: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. Have you ever received a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) that had no photo on it of the item you purchased? A COA should be specific to one particular specimen, with a photo of the item on it. At Pioneer Fossils, all of our fossils and minerals that come with a COA, have a photo of the exact item you just purchased. It can never be transferred to a different specimen. ****************************************************************************************************************************************** IMPORTANT: If you are not satisfied with your order, please contact us, and let us make it right, before giving any feedback.
