Description: In Stock and Ready for Immediate Shipment! Long SOLD OUT at the Royal Canadian Mint! Beauty, purity and rarity—the world’s purest (.99999 fine) gold coin is the perfect storm of numismatic and precious metals investments! The purple pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea) is the most widely distributed of all the pitcher plants, ranging across the entire eastern seaboard of the United States through the Great Lakes and across Atlantic Canada. Despite its extensive range, the pitcher plant is not the easiest plant to spot because it grows primarily in wet, inaccessible areas like the bogs, marshlands and the tundra of Newfoundland and Labrador. Despite harsh weather and poor soil, pitcher plants thrive in these highly acidic environments that tend to lack the nutrients most plants require. So how does the pitcher plant survive? It's a carnivore, of sorts; it eats meat! Insects are attracted to the plant's reddish, pitcher-shaped leaves that cluster together and look like flowers. The lip at the top of each "pitcher" is a perfect landing spot for flying pests. The insect is lured into it by nectar-rich veins and downward-pointing hairs that keep it from crawling out. Once inside, the insect drowns in the rainwater at the bottom and is digested by fungi and bacteria that reside there, as well as by the plant's own enzymes. Despite its appetite for insects, the pitcher plant is the only site where one species of mosquito will breed. Larvae feed on the decomposing insects before hatching, mating and returning to the pitcher to lay eggs. Today, pitcher plants are favorites of home gardeners (and kids needing a science fair project that isn't a baking soda volcano!), in part because of their hardiness. The purple pitcher plant was declared the provincial flower of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1954. It is the only member of the genus Sarracenia that can inhabit cold temperate climates. Investment Note Known as the “5 9s” gold coins because of their purity (.99999 fine), each coin in this series features one of the official provincial or territorial flowers of the great nation of Canada. These incredible proof coins have seen an incredible increase in value, and so are now very difficult to find. The factors of design beauty, low mintage, rarity, proof finish, purity, and weight (more than 1.1 troy ounces of gold) combine to make the perfect storm of numismatic investments. Don't miss out, make this golden investment piece yours today! Technology Note The marvelous refining technology of the Royal Canadian Mint has brought us the world’s purest gold coin, in a purity (99.999%) that puts other large gold coins to shame!
