Description: The Cook Monument at Cooktown was erected by “Hobbs and Carter” of South Brisbane, to designs prepared in the office of the Queensland Colonial Architect, George St Paul Connolly. Cooktown had been established in 1873 as the Endeavour River port for the Palmer River goldfields. By the mid-1880s it was serving one of the most significant goldfields in Queensland. In 1886, the “Cooktown Municipal Council” was seeking to commemorate James Cook’s encampment at the Endeavour River in the winter of 1770. The Council had intended that the monument include a statue of James Cook, but when tenders were called, they were of the column only. The foundation stone was laid in 1887 and the monument was completed by 1888. Around the monument, a small reserve for municipal purposes was included. This card, published by the “T. Willmett & Sons, LTD” is “No 48” and chronicles “Captain Cook’s Monument, Cooktown”. It is not dated but is in a group of cards c 1910s and is in very good condition with minor wear and a clean, clean image. The reverse is not written on and is clean. Willmett & Sons, LTD. Printers and Stationers, Townsville and Charter Towers” published a number of view-cards depicting local scenes in tinted halftone that gave the illusion of being hand colored. Some of these cards have a very high gloss finish. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
