About the company: Cartrivision was an analog videocassette format introduced in 1972 by Cartridge Television, Inc. (CTI), a subsidiary of Avco Corporation. It was the first commercially available home video recording (VCR) system in the United States, predating the more successful Sony Betamax by three years. However, Cartrivision was ultimately a commercial failure due to its high price, limited software library, and technical limitations. According to available information, only around 15,000 Cartrivision units were produced during its time on the market. The company was forced to file for bankruptcy in June of 1973.
