Description: A carte-de-visite portrait of the English poet Robert Browning (1812-1889), whose work was characterized by the use of dramatic monologues and an interest in obscure literary and historical figures. In 1846 he met Elizabeth Barrett. Despite her father’s opposition, they married the same year and eloped to Italy. After his wife’s death in 1861 Browning settled in England and enjoyed an established literary reputation, although his later works still attracted criticism for the rugged obscurity of their style. Photographed by Elliott and Fry of London. Condition: please see scans. The print presents a few small marks and imperfections but is otherwise in very fine condition. The mount is in excellent condition, with crisp edges and sharp corners. Dimensions: the dimensions of a standard carte-de-visite are approximately 4.1" by 2.5" (10.5 cm by 6.3 cm). All photographs are securely packaged using recycled cardboard. I go to the post office at least twice a week, usually on Monday and Thursday. If buying more than one photograph, please use the 'add to basket' function as this will combine postage. Orders over £100 will only be shipped via registered mail, which costs £5 extra.
