Description: Charles Field Haviland Limoges Cup & Saucer Demitasse Mozart Chantoung 1881-1882 Elegant Decorative DEMITASSE CUP & SAUCER from CFH, decorator studio Charles Field Haviland Limoges, France, MOZART CHANTOUNG w/Green Leaves, circa 1881-1882 DESCRIPTION: This beautiful cup & saucer has the smooth rim on the cup & the scalloped rim on the saucer. The delicate patterns consist of flowers and scrollwork with green leaves. The design is signed by G. Sira on both pieces. There are red flowers, green leaves, scrollwork and crosshatching to add to its allure. The gold on the handle, rims and foot of the cup is a bright, bold gold. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. We find no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines, flakes or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the colors and no crazing. Look in the photos to see this. The lack of utensil scratches on the set attests to the high quality of the porcelain china. DIMENSIONS: The demitasse cup has a diameter of 2 1/2" and a height of 2 3/8". The capacity of the cup is 3 ounces. The saucer has a diameter of 5 1/8" and a height of 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: Charles Field Haviland, who is the nephew of David Haviland, started his company in 1853 in Limoges, France to manufacture china for the American market. Charles Field in 1858 married Loiuse Alluaud, the granddaughter of the Alluaud porcelain family. In 1876 management of the firm was entrusted to Charles Field Haviland and the name was changed prior to his retirement in 1881. When he retired, the name was bought and has passed down through several firms until the present day. In Mary Frank Gaston's Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition, the CFH mark (#3) on this set is described as a red underglaze mark (Haviland manufacturer's mark) that was used from 1882-1900. In addition, there is a red overglaze circle mark indicating Charles Field Haviland as the decorating studio. Gaston cites this as mark #3 used 1859-1881 making the circa for this set 1881-1882.
