Description: I can't speak to the accuracy of the history used in the book, but this is a historical romantic adventure somewhat in the vein of Rafael Sabatini, except taking place in Maryland, and using easier-to-understand words. It follows the life of a skuzzy London orphan, Dale Morley, who escapes to America to become a farmer and hopefully carve a new life for himself. Captain Will Clairborne, the Secretary of Virginia (?), seeks him out for mysterious reasons and takes him under his wing. As time goes on, Dale mistreats his wife, works as a secretary, dallies with women, learns how to trade with Indians, gets in fights, captains a ship, and basically becomes a trustworthy lieutenant for the captain as Clairborne seeks to first keep the Chesapeake Bay area as a part of Virginia, and when he loses that political battle, at the very least protect Kent Island from the evil clutches of the colony of Maryland.
