Description: This original painting by Dutch painter Chris Berens, entitled "Just (Surrender, Submerge and Keep Breathing)," depicts a young girl underwater in a period deep-sea diving suit. Though she is submerged, she has removed her diving helmet and holds it in front of her as she calmly gazes at us. Light wavers down upon her from the rippling ocean surface through the tendrils of a jellyfish. She is clearly unconcerned, perhaps on some sort of underwater mission amongst the fishes, which gently surround her like a flock of geese or sheep. The dark eye of an enormous fish staring from the lower right corner is a deliciously unsettling touch. The 22x22" piece is painted on heavy wood panel with the sides painted black, and includes a second piece painted on the verso, an ink sketch of one of the fish in the painting, with the artist's signature and the title written out in his distinctive hand below it. The verso sketches that were included with this series are a fascinating look into the artist's unusual technique, sort of a secret perk of owning one of these paintings. I purchased this painting from Roq la Rue Gallery in Seattle during the artist's 2008 solo exhibition "Go West." The image of the painting hanging in a gallery is from that exhibition. The next-to-last image is the artist's published image of the painting. (The artist's digital images for publication are somewhat softer versions of the originals). The final image is of this painting on the artist's worktable in Amsterdam. This painting is in excellent condition, as received from the artist after it was on loan to a museum exhibition in the Netherlands at Museum Jan Cunen in 2016, "Chris Berens: A Modern Hieronymous Bosch." (The artist painted the sides of the panel black for the exhibition.) I wish I didn't have to sell it, but my office is downsizing and I will have no room to hang my art collection in our new space. This piece weighs 15 pounds before packaging, so shipping expenses may be higher than usually expected for a piece this size.
