Coffea arabica Kona is a Tropical or Tender perennial in the Rubiaceae family. Its native range is originally from Ethiopia. The first Kona Coffee grown was in 1828 from cuttings brought from Brazil. They thrive on Hualalai Mountain and Mauna Loa in elevations of 500 to 3200 feet. Plants may be grown indoors in a container with fast-draining soil. If grown inside, keep in a sunny window. If brought outside, place in a part shaded area. It has smooth evergreen leaves a few inches long. The bright white flowers are fragrant and smell similar to Jasmine. They are in bloom from May to June in clusters of 2-10. It can grow to 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide and is pruned to six feet for harvesting. It prefers to grow under a light shade with average water needs. Zones 10-11 Germination Soak seeds for 24 hours. Sow seeds 1/2" deep and lightly cover with a sandy medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination is 60-180 days.
