Description: The Sydney glass maker Crown Crystal Glass (from 1972 to 1988 Crown Corning) based at Waterloo was the largest and most successful manufacturer of Australian domestic glassware in the last half of the 20th Century. Many of the company's award-winning products can still be found in many Australian households and a successful export drive sent Australian glass to many countries including the USA, UK, Netherlands, Germany, and even Scandinavia - itself a major exporter of quality glass. The Hartford 28 process, used to produce these glasses, was developed to manufacture simple light weight tumblers. The HAAMA glassware range received an Australian Design Award from the Design Council of Australia in 1974. The design received further recognition when it was a finalist in the Dunhill Design Award. After 10 years in the market place the design was re-assessed by the Design Council and awarded a 'Classic Design Award'. The glasses in the range are of a simple cylindrical form with very heavy base. An indented band above the base gives comfort in the hand and provides visual separation of the solid base and hollow upper section. The name Haama came from the similarity of the shape to a hammer. Given the negative connotation of a hammer related to a fragile glass item, the spelling of HAAMA was adopted. Haama was one of the most enduring of the modernist designs produced by Crown Corning. A larger water glass was later developed specifically for the hospitality industry in the USA. The sweet dish was also popular in the USA.
