Description: Compellation of Collection: March 1971 Museum of Modern Art Program, Signed by Dali "Persistence of Memory" (reproduction print), Signed by Dali "Metamorphosis of Narcissus" (reproduction print), Signed by Dali Super 8 camera film reel Worked images off of film reel How I met Salvador Dali in 1971, spent an evening with him, his wife Gala, and several luminaries, while still a film student at Temple University. In March 1971, my wife and I spent a weekend in New York visiting a friend at Pratt Art Institute. We were museum stomping on Friday, and closed out the day at The Museum of Modern Art. The only piece of art from The Modern that I recorded on my Super 8 movie camera was Dali's painting "Persistence of Memory". The next frames on the film reel are images of Salvador Dali himself, outside the Modern, walking on the street with Gala. I approached Dali with my Super 8 and filmed. I asked Dali if he would sign my museum program, he graciously did so. Dali dropped Gala off at a salon nearby The St. Regis Hotel, his New York residence. We were ecstatic at the serendipity, and now a persistent memory. Being the uninhibited college students we were at that time, couldn't let it end there. We returned to The St. Regis Hotel and I asked at the front desk if I could speak to Dali. Of course, times were different in 1971. The desk person directed us to a house phone and said go ahead. I called Dali's apartment that Friday afternoon and spoke to Salvador Dali. I asked Dali if I could finish the film begun on the street; Dali remembered. Dali rather asked if we would join him Sunday night in The St. Regis Hotel lounge, The King Cole Bar. We returned that Sunday night to join Dali, Gala, and several other guests for a few hours. Dali had reserved the entire lounge for our table. Included in the group were Philippe Halsman (famous photographer and Dali collaborator), Fernando Rey (Spanish actor, French Connection film star), Arman (French/American artist), and importantly, Albert Field (Dali's archivist & authenticator). I remember Dali passing me his walking stick (a gift from the King of Spain), to feel the weight of the precious metal. We took a few candlelit photos that night, and I asked Dali to sign reproductions of two of his works: "Persistence of Memory" and "Metamorphosis of Narcissus", Dali did accommodate.
