Description: Up for sale, a Dave Smith Instruments Pro-2 monophonic/paraphonic hybrid synthesizer in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with a molded SKB travel case. This discontinued synth was the flagship mono synth for DSI, described by Dave himself as his “most powerful mono synth ever.” The Pro-2 has lots in common with its 12-voice sibling, the Prophet 12, but stands in a league of its own via a bevy of premium features including dual analog filter architecture, extensive step sequencing, superwaves, digital bucket-brigade delay, and more. The Pro-2 features two voices, each with two DSP-based oscillators (four total digital oscillators) and a triangle wave sub oscillator for exceptional low end fatness. The oscillators are routed through a pair of analog filters: a four-pole lowpass that takes its cues from the Prophet 5, and a state-variable SEM-style filter inspired by the work of Tom Oberheim (switchable between lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and notch). The two filters can operate in series or in parallel. The combination of digital and analog results in true “best-of-both-worlds” functionality, pairing all the warmth of analog filters with the precision, consistency and stability of digital oscillators. The two voices enable the Pro-2 to function as a paraphonic synthesizer, further broadening the scope of sounds on tap and overall functionality of the unit. There are three digital delays with pan, high-pass and low-pass filtering controls, plus a fourth digital bucket-brigade delay to further capture analog-style sounds. There are also four loopable five-stage envelope generators, four syncable LFOs with slew and phase offset, an arpeggiator, and a sixteen-slot modulation matrix. The 32-step, 16-track sequencer features real-time recording alongside standard programming, and the Pro-2 can be synced to an external MIDI clock. Additionally, the 4 independent CV I/Os mean the Pro-2 plays very well with other synths and setups, functioning notably well as a central controller/router. The three-and-a-half octave keyboard features semi-weighted keys with velocity and channel aftertouch, with backlit pitch and mod wheels, and two location and pressure-sensitive touch sliders for an extra layer of dynamic control offered by few other synths. This particular Pro-2 is in fantastic shape, with just a couple tiny marks on the wood endcaps. A rugged SKB molded hardshell case is included.
