Description: A group of UAC Marines responds to a distress call from a top-secret scientific base on Phobos, a Martian moon, only to discover it's been overrun by demons. ‘Doom: Annihilation’ Review: Hell Breaks Loose On A Budget The first thing that struck me about the movie was Giglio’s script, which has heart and a sense of humor but still lives up to its name. Here’s a filmmaker who cares about the details and knows his audience will, too. I suspect he’s a fan not only of Doom but of first-person shooters in general, as evidenced by the name he gave his lead: Joan Dark, the charming but haunted space marine played by Amy Manson. (Joanna Dark is the star of Rare’s beloved Perfect Dark.) There are Easter eggs throughout, including a nod to Wolfenstein tough guy William Blazkowicz and a Dr. John Carmack, named after the id co-founder and lead programmer of Doom. There’s a marine captain (James Weber Brown) who bears more than a slight resemblance to the pixelated portrait of “Doomguy” in the original ’93 game. The Faustian scientist from Doom 3, Dr. Betruger (Dominic Mafham), is also here. We see yellow, blue, and red key cards—and, in the spirit of things, they’re even central to the plot, which, naturally, involves scientists opening a gate to Hell on the surface of Phobos, Mars’s doomed moon. The action’s slick, and the creature effects look impressive, but the real standout is Manson, whose character undergoes a spiritual journey that elevates the film a notch above the level of Syfy-channel fare.
