The Dorsey Brothers were born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, in 1904 and 1905, respectively, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey were both playing instruments by 1910 under the strict tutelage of their father, a music teacher and bandmaster. By 1925 both had ventured to New York City to work as free-lance section players and as soloists. The Dorsey’s made good livings as freelancers because they were known to be reliable, as well as virtuoso players and expert sight readers. In 1928, using various studio musicians, the Dorsey brothers began recording under the name the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra for special engagements and studio work. The Dorsey Brothers split up in 1935 to form separate bands but reunited in 1953 and played together until 1956. Tommy died unexpectedly in 1956 by accident choking to death in his sleep. Jimmy took over the band. A mere number of months after Tommy died, Jimmy himself succumbed to throat cancer on June 12, 1957 in New York City. He was 53 years old. The brothers’ early demise signaled the end of the Dorsey era. The 4 CD’s are dedicated to the great work by the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra of 1928 to 1935. Band members during this period included many jazz greats. Some of these could include: Jimmy Dorsey (alto sax, clarinet), Skeets Herfurt (tenor sax), Jack Stacy ( tenor sax), Manny Klein (trumpet), Bunny Berigan (trumpet), George Thow (trumpet), Tommy Dorsey (trombone), Glenn Miller (trombone), Don Mattison (trombone), Joe Venuti (violin), Bobby Van Epps(piano) , Delmar Kaplan (bass), Eddie Lang (guitar), Roc Hillman (guitar) and Ray McKinley(drums). Pictured on the CD cover from left to right are : Vet, Connie and Martha Boswell The Boswell Sisters were an American close harmony singing trio of the jazz and swing eras. Hailing from uptown New Orleans, the group blended intricate harmonies and song arrangements featuring effects such as scat and instrumental imitation. Their style was very unique compared to other singing groups of this period. ‘Boswellese’ gibberish, tempo and meter changes, major/minor juxtaposition, key changes, and incorporation of sections from other songs was used in their songs. They attained national prominence in the United States in the 1930s during the twilight of the Jazz Age and the onset of the Great Depression.
