Description: Here is an adapter to use any late model small block mopar (318,340 etc.) distributor in early Mopar hemi motors. These fit chrysler, desoto, etc. All of the mopars use the same size distributor base circle, what changes is the length of the shaft drive that connects the distributor to the intermediate shaft that runs the oil pump. The original distributors are hard to find in good conditon, and even in perfect condition are based on a 60 year old technology. If you want a better running motor without spending a lot of money for a special unit, this is the ticket. One photo shows pinned unit compared to stock 331 1955 chrysler distributor. I machine these from precision drill rod, which is much tougher than the original shaft. All you do is cut the end of your late model distributor off near the end of the tang for the drive, and drill a hole through the distributor shaft to insert a spring pin through the adapter and shaft to hold it on. I find the best way to do this is use a combination square, set it to the correct length, 4.25, 4.5 inches, or whatever your motor calls for, and slide the adapter over the shaft to this dimension. If you put the end of the square on the top of the adapter, the ruler part will contact the distributor mounting surface. When the adapter is at the correct length, drill through the started hole in the adapter, through the shaft, and out the other side. Then you can just pound the spring pin through, and you are done. Typical distributor shafts are 1/2 inch, or .500. Some of the cheaper chinese units are sometimes a little smaller, and because the adapter is bored to the stock diameter, it is possible to get some wobble on the end of the adapter. So if the shaft is not the exact stock diameter, and I will bore an adapter specifically for your distributor. Also, if your setup is not parallel in the drill press, it is possible to have the adapter "walk" on the shaft when you drill. To solve this, and to be sure, you can just epoxy the adapter on the shaft at the correct dimension, and drill it, ensuring the correct fit. Also, you can use this adapter to fit some early other mopar distributor, like a flamethrower, or magneto to fit your hemi. I am also selling reasonable priced vaccuum and mechanical advance distributors in a seperate auction, where all of the work is done, and the adapter is correctly pinned to the right length. Keeping the fire lit a little better and cheaper.
