EARLY Origin of Species by Charles Darwin Evolution GREAT ART NOUVEAU

Description: This is a strikingly attractive single-volume (two-volumes-in-one) early edition of Charles Darwin’s landmark work on evolution, The Origin of Species. The book is undated and likely was published at some point between 1872 and about 1910 (most likely around the turn of the century, given the Art Nouveau design of the cover and spine). Chicago and New York: Rand, McNally and Company, n.d. Two volumes in one, 12mo., xxi, 224, v, 218. T.e.g. The text is from the Sixth Edition (1872), which was the last edition of this work published before Darwin’s death in 1882, and which includes extensive revisions Darwin made to the original text (first published in 1859). The Sixth Edition is significant for Darwin’s use of the term “evolution” for the first time in connection with his natural selection argument. The book is in very good condition but for some light and even toning to the pages, bumping to the spine ends and corners, shelfwear and edgewear (including some small areas of wear-through at the spine ends and corners), a prior owner’s bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper, a crease to the front free endpaper, a very small old bookseller’s plate at the bottom of the rear pastedown endpaper, a few small and virtually invisible spots to the edges of the page block, a small area of light soiling at pp. 24-25, and a small page tear at p. 132. The blues and greens on the cover and spine are still vivid; the gilt lettering and decoration on the cover and spine remain bright. The book is clean, unmarked, and tightly and squarely bound. Please see photographs as to condition. The book has no dust jacket, apparently as it was issued. It will be shipped bubble wrapped in a box.
