Description: "Stierkampf" (Bullfight), a 1907 hand signed and dated etching by the German Expressionist artist, Willi Geiger (1878-1971). A beautiful rich impression and clearly an early proof, given the included remarque etching study below the larger image. It is titled and hand signed in pencil by the artist as well as dated and signed in the plate, also included is a place name (probably Sevilla). Good sized, the image measures 9 3/4 x 12 inches, sheet size is approx. 15 1/4 x 19 5/8 inches. It is printed on cream colored wove paper with mild overall age toning. It has a few small tears along the very bottom edge well away from the image and a couple of minor foxing spots, otherwise it is in excellent condition and does not appear to have ever been framed or matted. Willi Geiger (1878-1971) was a German etcher, painter and teacher. Born in Landshut, the son of a teacher, from 1898-99 he attended the Munich Arts and Crafts School, and later the Technical University, where he passed the state examination to teach drawing. Geiger studied from 1903 with Franz von Stuck at the Munich Academy. He was awarded the National prize and the Schack scholarship for some of his early work and he traveled to Spain, Italy, and North Africa to draw, etch, and paint. In 1910, Geiger was awarded the Villa Romana prize for his success as a graphic artist. Geiger lived until 1914 in Berlin and exhibited there at the annuals. On his return to Munich, he became professor at the School of Decorative Arts. Geiger was politically opposed to the Nazi Party, his artworks were deemed "degenerate" by the authorities, and he was dismissed from his teaching post. On retirement he continued to paint, and after the war, he taught again at the College of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1951 Willi Geiger received the Culture Prize of the City of Munich where he lived until his death in 1971.
