Description: Navajo RidersOriginal Pencil Sketchby Edgar Payne This original drawing comes from the estate of Edgar Payne and DeRu's Fine Arts in Laguna, CA. Edgar Payne's most valuable works are those featuring Navajo Riders on Horses. This work was done as a study for Payne's famous works of the Canyon de Chelly. The following was written in a Bonham's Catalogue concerning Edgar Payne's Southwest work featuring Navajo subjects: Among all of these subjects, the works depicting the desert Southwest, and the Navajo in particular, seem to be the most sought-after and well-received. In these works, the artist is able to more fully communicate his respect for and admiration of the Natives of this region while capturing the balance of life and nature in his art. In 1917 the Santa Fe Railroad commissioned Edgar Payne to travel to the deserts of the Southwest and, through his drawings and paintings, to document and capture the lives and culture of the inhabitants he found there. He and his wife, Elsie, and their family lived with the Navajo and Hopi Indians for a period of approximately four months, during which time they visited such areas as the Grand Canyon and the Canyon de Chelly, a favorite of Payne’s as well as many other painters of the time. R.N. Cohen comments on this in The Paynes: Edgar and Elsie, American Artists by stating, “It was a fascinating adventure for the Paynes, one they repeated in later years, for, aside from their taste for adventure, they both had an innate sympathy and respect for these ancient peoples of the Southwest.” (R.N. Cohen, The Paynes: Edgar and Elsie, American Artists, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1988, p. 62) Some of Payne's paintings of the Southwest featuring the Navajo people bring up to 350,000.00. The drawing we are selling was one that Edgar Payne created in preparation for his famous work, Canyon de Chelly. We have posted several photos of paintings where one can see how these sketches were the source of inspiration as Payne put these original drawings on his canvas. Since the age of 14 his goal was to become a painter, he began his career by designing and painting scenery for the stage, and murals for homes and theaters. Primarily a self taught artist, he did though study briefly at the Art Institute in Chicago. Edgar Payne married his wife Elsie Palmer in Chicago in 1912. Recognized as one of California's leading landscape artists, Payne earned the respect of his peers and art critics for his Impressionistic landscapes painted in the plein-air style. Possessing a reverence for nature, he especially loved the mountains, and he took pack horses in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the upper lakes to sketch and paint. Payne Lake in the Sierras was named in his memory. Payne glorified the Sierra Nevada Mountains Range's majestic peaks and lakes, the Swiss Alps, boats in Brittany, France and Italy, the Arizona Tablelands with Navajo horsemen and the California landscape. He authored the book, "The Composition of Outdoor Painting", 1941. In his book Payne was quoted as saying about the process of painting, "A painter needs to study, meditate and experiment and practice interminably in order to produce a painting that would have nobility in its concept, variety, rhythm, repetition, unity, balance and harmony in its composition" -- all qualities found in Edgar Payne's works. Edgar Payne won numerous awards, and he exhibited and sold his paintings successfully throughout his career. His works can be found in important private collections and in museums such as the Laguna Beach Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Museum, Southwest Museum of Los Angeles and the National Academy of Design Collection. He and his wife lived in Laguna Beach, California for most of his career. He was involved in the formation of the Laguna Beach Art Association and became its first president in 1920. He died in Hollywood, California on April 8, 1947. [Source: Edgar Payne Gallery]
