The little island, called after the Celtic Saint Donan, on which it is built lies just at the meeting-place of three lochs. Loch Aish is the big loch opening out to the Sound of Sleat and a far view of the Cuihins of Skye. From it runs little Loch Long and the dark, mountain-bounded waters of Loch Duich. Winds beating off the hilltops constantly break the surface of Loch Duich with eddies scurrying in all directions : it is no place to hoist a sail. Descriptions of Loch Aish a hundred or so years ago describe it as a busy thoroughfare for shipping, with sometimes a score of craft coming up or down its sheltered waters at one time, sailing perhaps for Ireland or for America. Round the next headland, Plockton was the home port of schooners sailing chiefly to the Baltic. The schooners were both built at Plockton and manned from the locality, and the gravelly shallows visible in the photograph were allegedly caused by the dumping of their ballast.
