Description: Offering this fascinating original oil painting by distinctive, versatile & highly adroit WPA era artist Elliot Orr. Orr worked in a number of styles over the course of his career from the Social Realism of his WPA beginnings in the 1930’s to his plein-air, Barbizon school inspired landscapes of his latter years. While not known as a Surrealist painter by any means, he did have a brief, very interesting period during the early to mid- 1960’s where his paintings depicted curious scenes of strange, unobserved moments, often in mysterious settings with unusual objects and symbols. I almost hesitate to use the term “Surrealist” at all, these paintings are not your Dali or Miro psych freak-outs but extremely subtle nods to disquietude more in the vein of De Chirico or Ernst. Actually, Gertrude Abercrombie would probably be the most appropriate analog, minus the cats. This painting from 1962 is a myopic, rooftop level view of the moon from a shambled straw barn or rural attic of an abandoned house on a hazy evening of questionable weather. A boarded-up opening, missing slats, old calculations penciled on the lumber and a curious bluebird in the straw set a scene. Whatever is in the foreground or on the street below or looming on the horizon is unknown and perhaps unknowable. It’s a great painting that I have enjoyed pondering as will the buyer. The painting itself measures 10” X 13”, 16 ½” x 19 ½” with the frame. The frame itself is of quality wood with fabric matting and well-suits the painting which is in excellent condition with no marks, tears, lost paint or damage of any kind. Elliot Orr’s paintings have been exhibited by and are in the collections of the Smithsonian, both New York’s Whitney Museum & Museum of Modern Art as well as many other institutions. Elliot Orr was born Flushing, New York. In 1927, Orr was a student of Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and from 1927 to 1929, he studied at the Grand Central School of Art in New York under George Pierce Ennis, Henry B. Snell, and Wayman Adams. From 1929 to 1930 he studied under George Luks. Orr was included in the exhibitions "Romantic Painting in America" at the Museum of Modern Art in 1943, and "Painting in the US" at the Carnegie Institute. In 1977, he moved to Naples, Florida, where he was the subject of a retrospective exhibition held at Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples. Elliot has a considerable amount of work with a good auction representation.
