He began engraving in 1945 after training at the Paris School of Fine Arts. Alongside engraving, he began to study the history of art, which led him to look at the engraved work of Hercules Seghers, Dutch engraver from the beginning of the 17th century who influenced Rembrandt. With the higher education that the Estienne school then inaugurated, he was invited to learn about the range of bibliophilic practices and techniques which will be used when creating his illustrated books. In 1949, he obtained the Abd-el-Tif prize allowing him to be hosted for two years at the villa of the Algiers museum. On his return to mainland France, Jacques Houplain taught art history at the National School of Applied Arts, teaching that he gives alongside the continuation of his engraved work.
