What about some early Asphyx? Old Sepultura? Imagine one band playing a hybrid of these bands' styles, and that would be Germany's Excoriate. They have managed to create one crushing death metal record in total old school style. Unfortunately, the band called it quits right after recording this album, but at least it's finally out. The riffs here really reek of early Pestilence as I have mentioned previously. Just check out the title track, or "Poisoned by Darkness". If that's not enough, the vocalist sounds strikingly similar to Martin van Drunen, which is fine by me. There's lots of interplay between the vocal and riff patterns, showing that they put some thought and creativity into their work. Some of the other tracks, like "From Morbid Ruins" play around with some more melodic sounding riffs, but still sound haunting and, well, morbid. One thing that is pretty unique here is the production, specifically the drums. The bass drum really thumps, and the snare and toms are very boomy. I like this addition to this record, it gives it some character. The guitars are recorded well. Their nice and distorted, but the riffs are able to come through quite easily. Excoriate pays tribute to their roots with a deadly cover of Sepultura's "Mayhem" on this record. If one wasn't actually aware of it, they might miss that it's a cover, just because it fits in with the rest of the songs here so well. They do a great job at taking Sepultura's primitive aggression and combining it with their European brutality. It's really too bad these guys broke up, because this is album displays a firm understanding in what death metal should sound like. They don't really cover any new ground that death metal hasn't done before, but Excoriate certainly prove they can write coherent songs and really deadly riffs. Regardless, this is one of the years better releases that I can't help but listen to all the time. Excoriate are a band that has definitely had some staying power in my rotation since this album's release. On Pestilent Winds is a record that, from front to back, is full of the palpable old school atmosphere that metal of this persuasion requires. The production has the guitars erring a little on the swedish side in terms of how fuzzed out the highs are, however the tone remains razor sharp without becoming too blown out. This helps deliver all of their breakneck speed riffing without losing any of the intensity. The vocals are extremely cavernous, and I might add that Stefan does a pretty damn good Martin van Drunen impression. The drums have just the right amount of reverb to keep everything tight sounding but allowing the cymbals to wash everything out just enough. The album opens up with a baleful intro, building a sense of dread that fades into complete rage as the first riff of "Voice of Damnation" comes crashing down upon your skull to make your head bang! Then it's underway, you are being eviscerated by pure morbid death metal. Riffs spiral in and out of control over old school chops, thankfully, with the blasts reserved for when they are most effective and not abused like some cheap trick. One of the main highlights of this record is when the band slows down during the opening of '. . . From Morbid Ruins' to dredge up the true morbid feeling. The leads have a dreamy, yet epic quality to them that is definitely a palate cleanser from the non-stop onslaught of the first song before they plunge you headfirst back into the fiery maelstrom that comprises the rest of this song. As the album reaches its midway point, there's a Sepultura cover to bring you back to reality for a while. Might I add, they did a pretty good job with the drumming on this track. 'On Pestilent Winds' is written in a way that is firmly rooted in tradition. Here you won't find much in the way of sweeping guitar acrobatics or well-thought out segues, but you will find riff after riff of unadulterated old school death fuckin' metal that goes for the throat. Excoriate was a German death metal band that formed in 2001 in Freiburg. The band was known for their raw and unpolished approach to death metal, drawing heavy influences from the old-school death metal scene of the late '80s and early '90s. Excoriate’s music is characterized by fast and aggressive riffs, guttural vocals, and an overall dark and morbid atmosphere. Despite their brief existence, Excoriate left a lasting impression on the underground death metal community with their intense and uncompromising sound. "On Pestilent Winds..." - Album Description"On Pestilent Winds...," released posthumously in 2009, is Excoriate's only full-length album. This album encapsulates the band's dedication to the old-school death metal aesthetic, featuring raw production and brutal compositions. Tracks like "Pestilent Winds," "Voice of Damnation," and "To Age and Obsolete" highlight the band's ability to craft relentlessly dark and heavy music. The album’s lyrical themes revolve around death, decay, and apocalyptic visions, adding to its grim atmosphere. "On Pestilent Winds..." is a cult classic in the death metal underground, appreciated for its authenticity and raw power. 50 Similar ArtistsAsphyxGraveAutopsyBolt ThrowerIncantationEntombedDismemberDemigodFunebrarumDead CongregationImmolationCarnageBenedictionMorgothConvulsePestilenceVomitoryMasterObituaryDecomposedRippikouluCancerNirvana 2002Morta SkuldMassacreSadistic IntentNominonCianideKryptsRepugnantSlugathorAbhorrenceIntermentDismaCruciamentumDemilichMiasmalPhrenelithVasaelethPhlebotomizedGorementDisgraceSinisterMorgueTimeghoulPutrevoreDepravitySorceryRottrevoreTaphos
