Description: Name: Peipiaosteus pani (Sturgeon-Like Fish) Age: Early Cretaceous Formation: Jiufotang Formation Location: Pani Lake, Liaoning Province, China Size: Fish is 6.3 inches long! We recently acquired some nice fossils from the late Joseph Butterfield Collection (NJ). We will be auctioning these fossils here over the next few weeks. This is a nice specimen of a very unusual fossil fish. It is a Peipiaosteus pani, a Sturgeon-Like Fish, from the ''feathered dinosaur'' area of China. When it was first discovered, this type was thought to be a fossil shark, but further research found it to be similar to a sturgeon. The detail of this distinct fish is quite good - the bones of the skull are well preserved, and the fins and tail are easily seen. Even the skin of the fish is somewhat preserved! The complete fossil has nice color and contrast and is well showcased on the large, semi-oval plate of matrix. This is a very cool display example of this ancient fossil sturgeon from China.A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS.com is included with this item.
