Description: Fantastic Universe Science Fiction magazine, volume 4, no. 5 for December 1955. Measures about 5 1/2" x 7 9/16". 128 pages plus covers. This issue of Fantastic Universe contained the first publication of a complete novelet by Robert E. Howard and L. Sprague de Camp -- Conan, Man of Destiny. The Conan stories of Howard and de Camp defined and mapped the sword-and-sorcery genre. Plus, the cover contains a whimsical illustration of a robot-driven car. Although the cover artist predicted that such cars would be in use by 1994, it took another three decades to bring them to market in real life, although in a less anthropomorphic form. Condition: There is wear to the top and bottom of the spine. Both covers are present. There are no cut-outs or pen/pencil notations. The upper corner of the back cover is chipped off and there is a dog-ear on the same corner of the last page (127-128). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
