"FRONT LINE" DUFFY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/15/1932 - HFSID 177549 FATHER DUFFY. Scarce TLS: "Francis P. Duffy", 1p, 5¼x8¼. Holy Cross Rectory, 329 West 42d Street, New York, 1932 January 15. To Major General William N. Haskell, State Headquarters, National Guard, Municipal Building, New York City. In part: "I told our friend, Mrs. Benjamin that they spoiled the makings of a fine Papist when they made an Episcopalian out of her. She's all right. I like her. I wish she was a member of my own congregation. She stands up for what she thinks is right...." Duffy was chaplain of the "Fighting 69th" regiment of the N.Y. National Guard, which became the 165th Infantry in the U.S. Army in WWI. In 1919, the Catholic Church assigned him to "Hell's Kitchen," one of the poorest and toughest neighborhoods in New York City. The parish included part of Times Square. Five months after writing this letter, Father Duffy died. A bronze statue of him, dressed in a WWI trench coat in front of a Celtic cross, stands in Times Square. Erased file note at upper right corner. ¼-inch diagonal tear (all intact) at lower blank left edge. Staple impressions at upper blank left corner. Notes on verso (unknown hand), no show through. Overall, fine condition. See more material from these signers: FATHER FRANCIS P. DUFFY See more listings in our MILITARY (2,395) category. Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
