Description: Field of Waterloo towards sunset, on June 18th 1815.Plan of The Battle of Waterloo, at nearly 8 o'clock P.M. Sunday 18th June 1815, by Sergeant Major Edward Cotton, Guide Mont-St. Jean, 1854.Printed area (image as on the main picture) measures:Large poster 19.5x20.1 inch / 49.6x50.9 cm (approx. same sheet size)Historical hand-coloured plan of Waterloo battlefield as on sunset June 18th 1815 by Sergeant Major Edward Cotton, who himself fought at Waterloo in the 7th Hussars, 5th Cavalry Brigade, and during the battle had his horse killed under him. After leaving the army he settled in Mont St Jean and became one of the first guides to the battlefield in 1835; he also founded a Waterloo museum. This map would be carried by his visitors to the battlefield, including many fellow Waterloo veterans, from whom Edward Cotton built up a formidable knowledge of the battle. This particular map is an edition printed a few years after his death, and was drawn from his 1846 book ‘A Voice from Waterloo’. It is considered as one of the most popular histories of the Waterloo campaign and endured at least 13 editions between 1846 and 1913. The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. A French army under the command of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated by two of the armies of the Seventh Coalition: a British-led Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Prince of Wahlstatt. The battle marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
