Beautiful 18th Century, c.1750 Brass Hilted Hunting Short Sword Hanger w/ Dyed Bone Grip Click images to enlarge Description For Consideration is a Fine Example of a Mid 18th Century, c.1750 European Brass Hilted Hunting Short Sword Hanger with Dyed Bone Grip and a Long 23 inch and Maker Marked Blade! c1750's-1770 Due to it's long 23" single edged blade with deep blood groove, we believe this is a Northern European Hunting Short Sword Hanger and could have been used in the American Revolution. Originally a hunting sword these hangers were favoured by naval officers. Their short size made them easier to wield on the crowded deck of a man-o-war. This sword was found in an Estate in New Bedford Massachusetts along with other Revolutionary War Related items owned by the family. The Entire Short Sword Hanger measures approximately 28.0 inches long with a 23.0 inch strait blade. The Brass Hilt Measures 5.0 inches with a 3.25 inch black dyed Bone grip. Plain knuckle guard and a Brass Scallop Shell Guard with a raised repousse scene of deer in the forest. Above that is a wonderful Lion or Monster Head design which appears to be watching it;s prey below. On the end of the pommel is another Repousse face of either a Dog, Bear or Lion (Note images). The Blade is stamped with the maker mark on both sides of the blade. Fine Condition with everything nice and tight except some movement with the shell guard which is very common on these 250+ year old swords! A Beautiful choice example and one of the nicest hunting swords we have seen which had previously been on display in a Private Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts.
