Description: DETAILS: Original performance program for the Fisk Jubilee Singers for their 1882-83 tour. Measures 6" x 9" inches with four pages. An exceptionally well preserved concert program. Most programs of the ensemble from this period are found in only Good to Poor condition. This program however is in high grade condition. Clean surfaces with no writing, soiling or stains. Print is sharp and clear free of rubbing, stains or other blemishes. Paper structure is high with fold showing no signs of separation or tears. We would numerically grade it a 9.0 out of 10 which is very high for a paper item from this period. Mostly likely among the cleanest examples of the groups programs from this era, left in existence. BACKGROUND: The Fisk Jubilee Singers are an African-American a cappella ensemble, consisting of students at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The first group was organized in 1871 to tour and raise funds for college. Their early repertoire consisted mostly of traditional spirituals, but included some songs by Stephen Foster. The original group toured along the Underground Railroad path in the United States, as well as performing in England and Europe.
