A DRIED FLOWER GIFTED TO ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE AND HIS WIFE ON THEIR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN 1918 BY THEIR THREE CHILDREN A dried flower gifted to Arthur Conan Doyle and his second wife, Jean Elizabeth Leckie (1874-1940), on their wedding anniversary in 1918 by their three children: Denis Percy Stewart (1909-1955), Adrian Malcolm (1910-1970), and Jean Lena Annette (1912-1997). This fascinating relic was found inside an envelope (measuring 12mo and in fine condition with minor toning) with an autograph note handwritten in bold black fountain pen ink by Doyle’s wife: “Flowers from the bouquet which darling Denis, Adrian and Baby bought Arthur & me on the anniversary of our wedding day, Sept 18th 1918.”. One month after receiving this flower, Doyle unfortunately lost his first son, Arthur Alleyne Kingsley (1892-1918), from his first marriage from the Spanish Flu during World War I. THE RELIC WAS FOUND INSIDE AN ENVELOPE WITH A LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY FROM DOYLE’S WIFE, THE HANDWRITING HAS BEEN AUTHENTICATED BY CHRISTIE’S, THE LARGEST AUCTION HOUSE IN THE WORLD The handwriting has been authenticated by and is accompanied with documentation from Christie’s, the largest auction house in the world that maintains an entire department devoted to Rare Books and Manuscripts. The relic was sold by Christie’s in their special auction called The Conan Doyle Collection.
