From the back cover: Fogliano to Froberger A century of Ricercars An astonishing variety of mood and style is to be found within this musical form, which was widely popular for not much more than a hundred years. The later of the five featured composers, Frescobaldi and Froberger, are well-known. The three early masters of the form, Giacomo Fogliano, Julio of Modena, and Claudio Veggio, are virtually unknown today. Their music, although small in quantity, reveals different personalities, is attractively tuneful, and deserves to be more widely heard. Colin Booth uses three contrasting instruments for this recording, all based on Italian originals. They are not only well-suited to the music's Italian origins, but all have a clear, singing tone which reveals to the ear the music's complexities. From the Insert: FOGLIANO TO FROBERGER A CENTURY OF RICERCARS For many music-lovers, the term Ricercar calls to mind J. S. Bach's Musical Offering. In this late work of 1747 Bach included two extended contrapuntal pieces, which he called Ricercars. He used this title largely, one suspects, because the teasing theme presented to him as a challenge, by the future Frederick the Great, was so long, chromatic, and awkward, that to write a tautly constructed fugue upon it was impossible - even for Bach. Although one of Bach's mentors, J. C. F. Fischer, had included several ricercars in one of his collections, it was an old-fashioned form, and by Bach's time largely obsolete. It could be composed more loosely, but still demonstrate Bach's contrapuntal mastery. The Ricercar (derived from the Italian for 'searching, trying out, or finding) arose at the end of the 15th century, when this title was attached to didactic, quasi-improvisatory pieces for lute or bass viol; as the next century progressed. keyboard pieces began to have this title too. The use of the name was extremely flexible, and at this stage was almost interchangeable with Toccata, Canzona, or Fantasia. Keyboard music as an idea in its own right was only just beginning to exist, and most early examples include imitation of the polyphonic textures of vocal music. In passages recorded here, we hear motifs repeated in a higher or lower tessitura, or given in simple overlapping counterpoint. Decorative running passages also occur. These and other ornamentation were sometimes specified, but were also supplied spontaneously by players, who could entertain themselves and an audience, with simple elements of virtuosity and decorative finger-work, interspersed with a recurrent theme, which could be either a well-known song or one of the composer's devising. Several ricercars on this recording begin with either a solo line or block chords giving out the pavana dance rhythm (long-short, short), which we are most used to hearing in canzonas by Giovanni Gabrieli, usually heard played by wind instruments and brass.
