From the Balkans to the Middle East, from the Libyan coast to the Greek islands, from Malta to Corsica, from Tunisian cities to the Italian mountains, decisive battles have been taking place there since 1940. Even if Overlord has been in the collective memory for decades, the Mediterranean is undoubtedly a centre of gravity of the Second World War. This sea is marked by colonial empires. Alongside 120,000 Americans, the French gathered nearly 250,000 men for Operation Anvil-Dragoon. Commandos, airborne troops, infantry and armoured divisions came from the Army of Africa, the Free French Forces but above all from the intense mobilisation in the French colonies of North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. While the Americans moved back towards the Alps, General de Lattre de Tassigny's Army B seized Marseille and Toulon with the support of the local Resistance. While the Allies were considerably behind in the Battle of Normandy, it was several weeks early that the Mediterranean cities were liberated, followed by Lyon, Chalon, Mâcon and Dijon. In September 1944, these units joined the forces that had landed in Normandy in Burgundy. At a time when the Germans are preparing to fiercely defend the Reich, other challenges await the now "1st French Army": the integration of the FFI into its ranks, the recognition granted to colonized soldiers, the entry into Germany to overcome the trauma of June 1940 and to confirm France's return among the victorious nations. The Liberation Mission is an interministerial public interest group (GIP), whose purpose is to prefigure, organize, and promote the commemorative program for the 80th anniversary of the landings, the Liberation of France, and the Victory. In November 2023, it launched a labeling process that has already brought together nearly 2,000 projects throughout France. Project leaders can submit their application to the departmental committee of their prefecture.
