Description: Auction description France ca. 1850: A Migration in the Forest, Mennonite, Fine Inkwash study I believe this fine quality sepia inkwash study tells a story from history. This is a forest, with old and gnarled trees creating a mood. We see a group of people on the move -- but who are they? I believe this is a Mennonite -- Anabaptist religious community, emmigrating/immigrating within Europe in order to escape religious persecution. Movement from one place to another has been an important part of Mennonite history, and this is in my opinion a touching memento. The young child and his father, laden with wood, in the foreground, are especially moving. A very skilled work from a fine hand, expressive, with an unusual subject. Dimensions are about 8.5 inches by 6.5 inches, laid down on a slightly larger mat. Condition is very good and fresh appearing. Modestly priced for something of value. Shipping cost within the U.S. will be $8. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
