Description: I have here for sale a beautiful set of books ( VOLS I-VIII, lacking VOL IV but includes Supplement) entitled THE ANTIQUITIES OF ENGLAND AND WALES BEING A COLLECTION OF VIEWS OF THE MOST REMARKABLE RUINS AND ANTIENT BUILDINGS ACCURATELY DRAWN ON THE SPOT TO EACH VIEW IS ADDED Historical Account of its Situation, when and by whom build, with every interesting circumstance relating thereto by FRANCIS GROSE. These new editions were published between 1783 and 1787, by S. Hooper, High Holborn, and printed by C. CLARKE. These volumes are filled with engraved plates, fold out plans and drawings within the text. Volume VII has a hand coloured fold out map of ENGLAND & WALES. Volume VII being particular to Wales. Volume VIII being the supplement volume. Unfortunately lacking all county maps. Provenance: Bookplate - Gregory Lewis May - poet (1756-99) This work is considered one of the most important antiquarian publications of the 18th century. It was published in an in book form- as a several volume, very large and attactive set. Gilt title lettering and decoration to the spines. Spines are rubbed and some with loss at the edges, some repairs. Board corners have been repaired and reinforced - very strong. All boards are firm. A little scuff here and there to the boards. Hand marbled made endpapers. Bookplates to all inside board. Gilt dentelle to the inside of the boards. Some toning, foxing, and the odd page with staining on the corners but generally pages are clean and bright - very good for the age of the books. These books are in very good condition, tightly bound with no loose pages. A very nice set. 29cm x 20cm. Postage and packing : I know that you will be looking forward to receiving your order, each book is carefully wrapped in packing paper ( I have changed from bubble wrap to try and reduce my use of plastic) and posted in a Jiffy bag if size permitting, if not it is double wrapped in corrugated cardboard, brown paper and then securely taped.
