A rare signature from an important Mexican sculptor. Inscribed book page signed "Ziga" in black ink and "Eduardo L. Valencia" in blue ink on colophon page, with two unidentified signatures in black and blue ink. 145 pages with 97 pages of b/w and color photos, 10½x14¼x1¾. Bilingual copy (Spanish and English) copy of Zuiga, with autobiographical notes by Zuiga, introduction by Ali Chumacero and translation by William K. Boone. Published by Galera de Arte Misrachi in Mexico. ©1969 Galera de Arte Misrachi. Hardcover with slipcover. Copy no. 18 of a limited edition of 100. First edition. Green and tan covers with green moir fabric pastedowns and panels on slipcover and gold-colored printing on spine. Text block has embossed gold-covered top edge. Costa Rican-born artist Ziga (1912-1998) was primarily a painter up until 1936, when he moved to Mexico and became an important figure in Mexico's political moderne style, with his life-sized stone and bronze sculptures of indigenous women with big proportions and tightly-wrapped shawls. His art reflects a great respect for the cultures and people of Central America and is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City and the Hirshborn Museum in Washington, D. C., among others. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Spine of book and slipcase and edges of slipcase panels are lightly discolored. Corners of covers are lightly worn and creased.
