French 950 Silver Handle Carving Set Minerva 1 Mark Unknown Maker Paris 1800’s

Description: Antique carving set, knife and meat fork with shell pattern on silver handles. Blade of knife is stamped PARIS and the fork is stamped ACIER FORGE. Both have the French Minerva hallmark (1st standard) indicating 950/1000 silver purity on the ferrules. There is another stamp opposite the Minerva which may be a maker's mark or a guarantee stamp but it is too illegible to identify. The knife blade has some pitting and dark spots. The fitted box is in VERY rough condition, though the clasps still function to keep it closed. Knife measures 12 5/8” long. Blade is 7 5/8". Fork is 10 7/8” long. The box measures 14 1/2" by 5". These pieces are antique and because 950 silver is softer than sterling, the silversmiths finished the pieces by burnishing them with a rounded steel blade. This leaves a very slightly hammered effect on the finish but also makes it more resistant to wear and scratching. We’ve polished the silver with jeweler’s rouge for these photos but it may need a good buffing again by the time you receive the set. THANKS FOR VIEWING OUR LISTING!
