The Walton Railroad was incorporated in Georgia on August 27, 1872, and amended February 21, 1873, and September 28, 1881, to construct and operate a 60" gauge railroad from Monroe to Social Circle, GA, about 10 miles. The Walton RR opened for operation on September 1, 1880, 10 miles of road between Monroe and Social Circle. On March 11, 1884, the property was conveyed to the Gainesville, Jefferson & Southern Railroad in exchange for stock and the assumption of the Walton RR’s long-term debt. The Gainesville, Jefferson & Southern Railroad was incorporated in Georgia on August 23, 1872, to construct a railroad from Gainesville through Jefferson to a point on the Georgia Railroad, all within the state of Georgia. On March 11, 1884, the GJ&S absorbed the Walton RR and promptly narrowed its gauge. The GJ&S constructed with its owns crews, and opened for operation on June 1, 1883, the main line from Gainesville to Jefferson, 20.00 miles, and a branch from Belmont to Hoschton, 8.00 miles, all narrow gauge. Under contract dated March 31, 1883, an extension was built from Hoschton to Monroe, 26.22 miles, which was opened for operation on March 11, 1884. With the acquisition of the 10 miles of the Walton RR from Monroe to Social Circle on that same date, the total mileage was 64.22. The GJ&S went into receivership on March 4, 1897, and on July 5, 1904, its property was sold at foreclosure. The 10 miles originally operated by the Walton RR was detached and reorganized as the Monroe Railroad and widened to standard gauge. The remaining 54.22 miles was acquired by the Gainesville Midland Railway at its organization on August 1, 1904. The main line was extended by the Athens Construction Company as standard gauge from Jefferson to Fowler Junction, 16.28 miles and opened in 1906. The gauge was widened to standard between Gainesville and Jefferson in 1908. Finally, in 1913 the railroad company widened the gauge on the branch between Belmont and Monroe and built a small branch of 1.75 miles from Gainesville to New Holland. In the fall of 1938 the property was acquired by a group headed by Forest Greene who had organized he Gainesville Midland Railroad. This new company acquired the old GM Ry. for $127,000 and assumed the outstanding bonded indebtedness. The 34-mile branch from Belmont to Monroe was abandoned at the beginning of 1948. In 1959 the Seaboard Air Line Railroad took over the Gainesville Midland as a subsidiary.
