Re. #201 in 1914.to Southern Iron & Equipment Co. #1810 to Tennessee R.R. #30, Oneida, TN,on 7/30/1923. to American Rolling Mill Co., Middletown, OH, in 5/1943. The Gainesville & Northwestern Railroad was incorporated in Georgia on February 9, 1912, to build and operate a railroad from Gainesville, GA to Robertstown, GA. The railroad company was controlled by the Byrd-Mathews Investment Company through ownership of the entire $750,000 in capital stock. The Byrd-Mathews Lumber Company, a related company, had a sawmill at Helen, GA. The railroad extended from a connection with the Gainesville Midland Railway at New Holland Junction, GA to North Helen, GA, 35.133 miles. Under a trackage agreement, it used the line of the Gainesville Midland between New Holland Junction and Gainesville, about 2 miles. The railroad was built by the Unicoi Gap Construction Company, by whom it was operated from March 12, 1913, the date of opening, to July 1, 1913. On November 23, 1923, the company went into receivership. Steam locomotive passenger service was discontinued in 1925, due to decline in business, and rail motor busses substituted. Daily freight service was discontinued during 1926, also due to declining business, and freight trains were operated three or four times a week, as required. Passenger service was entirely discontinued during March 1931, due to almost complete lack of business. Two rail motor busses were then operated one round trip daily to handle all mail, express and local merchandise. A steam powered freight was operated only when sufficient loads warranted it. On June 2, 1931, the receives of the Gainesville & Northwestern applied to the ICC for permission for complete abandonment. The only company along the line opposing the abandonment was the Morse Brothers Lumber Company which operated a sawmill at Helen. Since the line was being operated at a substantial loss, the ICC approved the petition for abandonment on October 19, 1931.
