Description: For your consideration is this Geer's Hartford City Directory for the years 1853 and '54. The Directory is 4 1/4" x 6 1/4" and has 282 pages. Some of the highlights, besides the directory itself. On page 185 there is the city directory for Colored Persons, and their occupations, such as shoemaker, cook, white washer, tailor, boot maker, seaman, waiter, chair bottomer, laborer, laundress, washerwoman and so on. This section covered pages 185, 186, 187 and a little over half of page 188. There are Engravings of all Church Edifices, also Wadsworth Athenaeum, and all the Connecticut Railroad Routes in Connecticut; all of which have been drawn and Engraved expressly for this Directory, also Registers of Steamboats, Stages, Packets, Officers of Banks, Insurance Companies, Churches and Societies, Seminaries, Schools, Fire and Military Companies, also Table of Distances & C. There are 19 Engravings of Churches, many of which are steepled, as is found so many times in New England. The covers have some spotting here and there (looks like ink), a little fading, some corner bumping and an "abrasion" to the lower left of the front cover where it meets the spine, a small chunk taken out, which does not go the the inside. The first page has very old tape which isn't doing its job any more. The map is also taped, but that has held, 'though brittle. I found a few small tears but nothing major. Some small stains, age toning, etc. I appreciate your interest!
